Horton's elegiac anthology of 15 mostly hard SF stories illuminates a broad spectrum of grief over love thwarted through time, space, human frailty or alien intervention, from the gentle melancholy of Michael Swanwick's "Triceratops Summer," which posits tame Technicolored time-warped dinosaurs in Vermont, to newcomer Leah Bobet's "Bliss," an agonizing riff on near-future drug addiction. Several selections address current political-social issues, like Mary Rosenblum's "Search Engine," which extrapolates today's technology to chilling, Big Brotherly results. The long closing story, Alastair Reynolds's "Understanding Space and Time," however, presents a ray of cosmic hope the sole survivor of a plague that decimated humanity is rescued and healed by intergalactic entities and lives out millennia while seeking ultimate truths, returning to see mankind regenerated. This anthology reflects the concerns of the genre today—and the apparent inability of our society to do anything about them. -- Publishers Weekly

Sci Fi fan from way back, read all the classics when they were new. These continue the tradition. Enjoyable escapism, some novel points of view and obviously lots of imagination. The title says it all, best of the year.Product details

Science Fiction The Year Best 2006 Edition eBook Joe Haldeman Alastair Reynolds Reviews
If this was the "Best of the Year" for 2006, then this definitely was NOT a vintage year! No fine "wine", only vinegar.
I have been a fan of science fiction for 60 years, and over these years I've read some excellent work, some good work, some poor efforts, and a scattering of "dogs". This collection had more "dogs" than a kennel.
Every story had these characteristics, they were (1) verbose; (2) filled with detail that always fractured into messy, pointless minutia; and (3), loaded with complicated personal intrigue. Of course, when an author lacks imagination and word skill, these characteristics are necessary in order to assemble enough words to create the appearance of a story.
I paid $2.99 for this, and I believe that owes me a refund of $52.99...that includes a compensation of $50 for the time I wasted trying to find a decent story in this "word salad".
Respect your money and your time do not buy this.
A very interesting set of stories. Most of them really made me think about other realities and how I might act in the same set of circumstances. Refreshing writing.
Very interesting stories and well worth the price. Considering price I'd give it five stars. I loved the last story about Elton John and the last human on Mars/Earth.
Although most of the stories kept my attention, they did not have the polished touch found in years best science fiction forwarded by G.D. they seemed like b-sides.
This book with its variety of stories lives up to its title-and then some! As a seventy year reader of science fiction, I thoroughly enjoyed the top notch storytelling. A very good choice.
I enjoyed this volume. I re-read some familiar stories and experienced some fascinating new ones. The editor did a good job pulling together an assortment of story lines that were bound to please. I would recommend this volume to other science fiction fans.
Love these stories!
