This is the memoirs of the pioneering Presbyterian missionary, George Leslie Mackay, written in 1895.Mackay was a missionary in north Taiwan from 1872 to his death in 1901, based in Tamsui / Danshui.
I suspect the memoirs are heavily ghost-written by the Rev J.A. MacDonald, credited as the editor.
The memoirs cover Mackay's move to Tamsui, with substantial sections on his knowledge of the geography, geology, agriculture, flora, fauna and society of Taiwan, and his work in building missions and hospitals.
While parts of the memoirs are very dated - for example the references to "heathens" and "savages", and the dismissal of all Chinese religions as "idolatry" - it is still a very valuable first-hand account of European contact with Taiwan in the late nineteenth century.
Mackay is fondly remembered in Tamsui to this day. A number of the buildings with which he was associated are now memorials or museums, and his name was used for the Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei.
There are a number of disappointing quality-control issues with this edition. It appears to have been fairly hastily copied from a library version. The cover states Mackay's name as "George Leslie Mackey" - which for me demonstrates a fairly profound lack of concern for the work. A number of pages are blurred to the point where they are unreadable - apparently from movement while they were being scanned. Maps have been copied folded-in, and there are even several pages showing images of the copier's fingers!
While the quality-control issues are disappointing, the work itself is a valuable historical record, and this edition will give you convenient access to the vast majority of that record.
